An Auckland Blackleg.
The bookmakers of Auckland are lamenting the hasty departure of ft well-known tonsorial artist, who shook the dust of this city off his feet (nigger nines by the way) on receipt of the news of Dunlop’s victory in the Mak bourne Cup, The individual in question was a man of colour, and has shaved the faces of a good many in Auckland. He carried on business in a small shop not far from Queen* Street, and in addition to his ordinary business did a little in the way of betting. So long as success smiled on his wages he was happy, and in this respect he had nothing to complain of, for last year on one event he won considerably over £lOO from one man alone. His former success did not stand by him this year, and he lost heavily on Dunlop, but as settling day drew near, it occurred to him that he was " called away.” No time was lost after this resolve was taken, and this sporting nig secretly packed up his traps any bade adieu to Auckland. When the local pencillers called round for their wagers they discovered the “ blackbird ” had flown, but where to remains a mystery.—Bell.
