The following was the betting at the poet t— Vnlea.no 4 to 1. Silvermlne and The 7 tn 1. Lara and Lord Allen 10 to 1. Recall and Oaklrigh 12 to 1, Remus. Escutcheon, Dunlop and Spade Guinea 13 to 1. /fter some delay the field was sent away with a straggling start, Menoitte was the first to get on his leas, and from this position ho led Dividend, Oakleigh. Recall and others. Volcano, the favourite at this time, was rnnning in the forward division. Coming round the turn Menotti was still ahead, but as the horses approached the hilt Lord Allen and Volcano improved their positions with Menotti still leading. Silvermine, Dividend The Levite, and Lara were racing together and headed Division with Spade Guinea and Lord William in front. AU along the back stretch the positions were the same until within about six furlongs of the post, when Oakleigh came up on the outside of the field and took fifth place. He held back for a few yards, but whon within half a mile of th post Gasbeerrier took command of affairs and Silvermine ran into second place with The Levite, Lara, and Oakleigh racing together fnr third place. At this time Dunlop and Remus were close up to the leaders, but as Silvermine was the runner-up of last year it was thonght he would win and nearing the turn the latter made his effort, but soon died away. Here Oakleigh, coming with a wet sheet, ran through his horses, and leading into the straight with Remus, Dividend, Silvermine, Dunlop, and King of the West as his nearest opponents, won easily by a length and a half from Remus, who in turn was a length ahead of Dunlop. Lord Allen was fourth and Dividend fifth, followed closely by Recall, Silvermine and Gasburner. Volcano and Phaon brought up the rear. Time, 2 minutes 41 seconds.
The ring have been hard hit over Oakleigh’s win. The win is popular with the public. The result of the race shows that Ballarat division have made a very clever coup similar to Sheet Anchor’s win in the Melbourne Cup. It is said that Escutcheon was interfered with, and six furlongs from home Dividend rolled on to Pocahontas who was in front of him.
The owner of Oakleigh wins £13,000. Drake, the bookmaker, leaves for New Zealand in a day or to, he has had a bad time of it.
