INTERNATIONAL YACHTING.
THE THISTLE AND THE VOLUNTEER.
THE YANKEES WIN EASILY.
London, October 2.
1 here has been considerable excitement in New York and London since the English yacht Thistle got beaten by the Volunteer, but though the charge that the former had been 11 doctored ” was discountenanced by her owner, the suspicion was not allayed, and most backers were very cautious as to how they placed their money, the Americans being very willing at short odds. The second started with " dirty ” weather, although there was a slight breeze. The weather seemed to have cooled the extreme interest of the previous evening, for the number of actual spectators was small in comparison to what might have been expected. The Volunteer appeared from the Press steamer to have a good start for a few minutes, when a lull in the wind gave a slight gain to the Thistle. The Volunteer, however, gradually got the best of it, and though the betting was even at half-way, she eventually won by a few seconds short of twelve minutes.
