THE MITCHELSTOWN RIOTS.
BRUTAL EXPRESSIONS IN COURT. COUNSEL CALLED A RUFFIAN AND A COWARD. London, September 26, Dr Tanner, a member of Parliament, created a sensation in Court during the trial of Mr O'Brien for his connection with the late riots at Mitchelstown. During an interval in the conduct of the case Dr Tanner, who was within the precincts of the Court at the time, got very excited, and called counsel for the Crown a ruffian and a coward. He said he hoped the counsel would be “ vilely injured ” before leaving Mitchelstown, aud used other very abusive epithets towards that gentleman.
The Bench offered to order the arrest of Tanner, if pressed by counsel, but as the matter was not pushed by the latter no further action is likely to be taken.
