" Jake ’’ Kilrain, who is to fight Jim Smith in January next for £5OO aside and the championship of the world, is an Irish-American, whose reputation at present is based upon the reports of what he can do rather than upon what he has done. Not long ago an offer was made, through the New York Clipper, to back Kilrain against Sullivan in a glove fight, under the London P, R, rules, for £lOOO a-side and upwards and the Police Gazette diamond belt, which represents the heavy-weight championship of the world. A deposit of x”200 was made by Kilrain's backer to bind the match, but Sullivan's backer, Pat Sheedy, declined to cover it, on the ground that Sullivan's broken arm had not sufficiently recovered to allow him to fight. Kilrain is said to be a magnificent athlete, and to be possessed of wonderful muscular and physical developments.
