FIRE AT OSMOND.
WALLACE’S STORE BURNT. The building occupied as a store and dwelling house by Mr James Wallace, Ormond, was burnt down about one o'clock yesterday morning. A man named Gillies, sleeping in a lean-to, was the first to give the alarm. At this time the building waa full of smoke, and It Was with the greatest difficulty that the inmates of the building managed to as. cape. Every effort was made to save some of the furniture and stock, but owing to the dense smoke, they absolutely failed, and everything, excepting the safe containing the books, was destroyed. The fire ie aupposed to have started in the store. The building was owned by Mr P. Barry, of .Waipukurau, and was insured for £BOO in ths Victoria and £250 in the New Zealand, The stock was insured for £lOOO, but Mr Wallaoe eltimates his loss at about £7OO over this. A piano was insured for £5O. The store was the local post office end telephone station. The telephone instrument was destroyed, as was a considerable mail to have been sent to town yesterday. __ _
