A request from A. Parnell to level the footpath in front of his shop was agreed to. T. W. Porter wrote asking that certain fences on the Waikanae streets be removed.

It was agreed to move the fences at Custom House and Mataroa streets. A COXPLAINT AKD BEQUEST. X- S. Greene wrote as follows t— I desire to draw yout attention to the late sass brought against me at the instigation of the Town Clerk, for unlawfully acting as auctioneer in the Borough of Gisborne, by which I have sustained some loss besides having to pay costs incm.ed in defending the prosecution. This prosecution, it has been al! jed, was brought to suit the ends of private parties, and I think it hardly fair that the Town Clerk, in his public capacity, 'hould have allowed himself to have been made a party to any such proceedings. I therefore beg to request that your Council all refund to me the amount of expenses incurred in defending the case, namely, £4 4s. The case having been brought nominally by the police costs were not allowed by the Court. After some discussion Cr Lucas moved, and Cr Joyce seconded, that the £4 48 be paid. Cr Tucker proposed as an amendment, and Cr Townley seconded, that no refund be made. The amendment was cairied by four to three. PUBLIC WOBKS COMMITTEE’S BEPOBT. The Public Works Committee repotted : — The Committee make the following recommendations:—Childers Boad culvert.—That tenders be called for a brick culvert, 70 feet long, 3by 6 high, and 2 by 6 wide. Waikanae dam.—That the work as suggested be done. Metal.—That tenders be called for 25C0 yards of metal for Gladstone Boad. It was decided that the recommendations of the Committee should be carried out. With reference to the Waikanae dam, as repotted on at last meeting, Cr Tucker said if the Council would deduct £2O for necessary repairs to the Grey-street bridge from the amount of the tender for the erection of the breastwork for the dam he would guarantee the payment of one half of the balance, provided the Council would allow him the option, before the acceptance of any tender, of withdrawing his guarantee if the amount of the tender was excessive in his opinion. The offer was accepted. BOAD OVTBSEEB’b BEPOBT.

The Hoad Overseer reported :— During the last fortnight three men have be*n employed c'eaning water tables in different streets and clearing rubbish off Glau-.one Boad. The junction of Blight street and Palmerston road has been repaired U a cost of £2 16s. of which the Gas Co. pays 18s. The repairs to Cobden street (south) has been done as ordered by your Council, at a cost of £1 16s. I would recommend that, for the future, some provision be made to limit the carriage by the contactor to lj yards measurement unless the tins of the drays an of sufficient width, as tin side streets are not fit for any heavier traffic (such as came in when the Childers road contract was being done). One dray measured by rayself was 85 feet (three cubic yards four feet), That means 4J tons with tin dray. Day labour to the extent of £l4 had been employed. The report was adopted with the exception of making provision for the measurement of dray carriage. jrVISANCI XVaPECTOB's BEPOBT. The following report from the Inspector of Nuisance was adopted :--- Everything is my department is working satisfactorily. The weather and the bad State of tin roads has made it very hard work tor tin nightsoil contractor during the past month, but I am glad to be able to state that be has finished his work in the contract time.
