The Freezing Question.
ANOTHER PROPOSAL. A well attended meeting of sheepfarmers and others was held at the Masonic Hotel on Saturday afternoon last to consider a proposal made by Mr Wilcox, the representative of the New Zealand Shipping Co. Amongst those present we noticed Messrs C. Evans (in the chair), A. McKenzie, Ewen Cameron, J. Clarke, W. K. Chambers, P. Barker, A Mo Donald, F. J. Shelton, Kirkpatrick, Sunderland, Murphy, Dobbie, Beid, J. W. Johnston, W. Ferguson, McPhail, Donner, Wethered, Aislabie, Berry, Reynolds, and others. The proposal of the Company was to send a sailing-ship in September upon being guaranteed 10,000 carcases and 2000 bales of wool. The slaughtering was to be done at Mr Williams’ Boiling-down Works at six-pence a head, and there would be an additional charge of three-pence a head for lighterage. Four hundred carcases per day could be frozen on board the vessel. After carefully considering all the attendant expenses,Mr Willcox said he could guarantee the price to be not more than 3Jd per pound. A long and animated discussion took place at the conclusion of Mr Wilcox’s remarks, it being ulfmately moved by Mr Ewen Cameron, and seconded pro forma by Mr Chambers, that one trial cargo be sent. This was put to the meeting and lost, only the mover voting for it. Mr Clark then moved that a trial shipment be made through Messrs Nelson Bro'- ers. This was also lost, and after votes of thanks to Mr Wilcox and the Chair had been passed, the meeting concluded, after really nothing whatever had been done,]
