GAOL-BREAKERS ARE SENTENCED

WELLINGTON, Nov. 9 Chief Justice O’Leary in the Supreme Court to-day imposed sentences of 18 months’ hard labour on Marcus Paul Greenhalgh, aged 33, a labourer ,and Allawi David Arnesen, aged 24, a coal miner who both escaped from Witako prison on October 31. His Honour said that breaking out of. prison seemed inevitably to lead to* other crimes—getting clothes and food. He warned that any further prison breaking would be dealt with more severely. The prison superintendent told him on the last occasion that there was always a lot of unrest among prisoners when someone escaped.
