GOLF NOTES ON PLAY IN N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS

P.A. INVERCARGILL, Nov. 9 The most, exciting match of the day was that between the Australian champion, Miss' P. Borthwick, and the New Zealand ...champion, Mrs Jackson Ball. The first hole was halved in 5 s. The New Zealander won the second hole. Miss Borthwick squared the match with a birdie 4 at the next. Both found bunkers f at the 4th. The New Zealander scored a win with one over bogey. They halved the next. Miss Borthwick again squared the match by getting her put down at the sixth. - She took the lead for the first time when she rammed home a 10-foot . putt at the 7th. She failed to get .-, bogeys at the next two holes, and . Mrs Ball, making no mistakes, turned for home 1 up. The tenth was '• halved in bogeys, and the 11th in birdie fours. Mrs Ball won the 12th after Miss Borthwick had been bun- . kered. With 6 holes to go Mrs Ball • was 2 up. Her opponent took the 13th hole with a birdie 4. A chapter " of accidents followed for Mrs Ball. Her opponent squared the match at the 15th. Miss Borthwick was one up at the 16th. Mrs Ball squared the match at the 17th. She won the last in 4’s, after the Australian had missed, a 4-foot put. Miss M. Bishop proved too good for Miss Z. Hudson, winning by 5 and 4. Playing a masterly pitch, a fea- . ture( of her play, the Australian made few mistakes. » With much of her green play shaky Mrs H. A. Murray went under to Miss J. I. Fletcher 4 and 3. The Australian was 4 up at the turn and ■ the game finished at the 15th, where Miss Fletcher scored a birdie 3. The match between Miss R. Hodges and Miss J. E. Percy was expected j to be a close contest, but the Queenslander completely lost touch. The Auckland girl, reeling off bogey after bogey, was never troubled, winning 7 and 6. Miss Hodges was 7up with ' 7 holes played. Miss Percy’s only win of the match was the 11th., after Miss Hodges had been stymied. Correct 3’s at. the next ended the game in favour of Miss Hodges.
