Watersiders at Port Chalmers Praised By English Captain

Praise for the efficiency and co-op-eration of the watersiders at Port Chalmers was expressed recently by Captain E. A. Burton, master of the 11,000-ton Hertford. Captain Burton said that because of rapid loading the ship was able to clear the harbour more than two days ahead of schedule.

“We have had a very good spin at Port Chalmers,” said Captain Burton. “The watersiders are to be congratulated on the good piece of work they have done in the quick handling of the cargo. If watersiders throughout the Dominion worked like they did at Port Chalmers there would be no complaints of shipping hold-ups. Although this is my first voyage to New Zealand for four years, I am sure that the ship spent milch less time at Port Chalmers, than it would have at North Island ports.

Captain Burton, whose remarks were endorsed by the Chief engineer W. Reddington, said that he had conveyed his appreciation to Mr. J. Bain, secretary of the Port Chalmers branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union The Hertford arrived at Port Chalmers on October 13 to discharge about 2000 tons of general'cargo from Liverpool.
