HIGHER PAY FOR UNLOADING WHEAT

AUCKLAND, October 10.

A settlement is expected through the negotiations being handled by the Auckland Port Committee of the claims by the Watersiders’ Union for an additional Is 4d hourly for handling bulk wheat retrospectively from February, 1947. The Port Committee will deal with it again at its next meeting.

A possible hold-up was averted in June when the shipping company concerned agreed to increase the extra rate from 7d to Is 4d hourly. This rate has now been paid on three successive grain ships, but it has not been incorporated in the Waterfront Industry Commission’s order. The Union’s present demand backdates from this. The steamer Ribera, with bulk wheat from Geelong, is expected in Auckland at the week-end.
