£400 a Week to Maintain Racing Stable

SYDNEY— One of Sydney’s most successful trainers, Maurice McCarten, who once was a top-flight jockey said recently that his racing stable cost £A4OO a week to maintain. McCarten said the weekly bill embraced wages, feed, nominations, acceptances, track and float fees.

Recognised by most racegoers as the busiest trainer in Sydney, McCarten is responsible for 45 horses, 33 of them in training. Since 1942, when he first took out a trainer’s licence, his team have won more than £A150,000 in racing stakes, a yield almost three times as great as the (aggregate outlay, involved in their maintenance. McCarten was the leading trainer in New South Wales during the 1948-49 racing season, when he trained 31 winners, 33 seconds, and 23 thirds. McCarten employs a staff of 25 to care for the horses and generally maintain his racing stable. REUTER.
