SEAMEN’S STRIKE IS CALLED OFF IN ITALY
(N.Z.P.A.— REUTER CABLE) (Rec. 9.15). ROME, September 28. Italian seamen last night called off a strike which has held up shipping at Italy’s main ports for twenty days. Signor Giuseppe di Vittorio, the secretary-general of the Labour Confederation, ordered the resumption of work, after making an announcement that negotiations with the employers about pensions and salaries were being re-opened. Signor di Vittorio said that the unions were modifying their demands. This was because of there being a loss to the owners in the hiring of their ships through the devaluation of sterling.
Italy is ao-ain troubled with industrial unrest brought on by dissatisfaction with wages and the cost of living.
About 100,000 textile workers have begun one-hour daily strikes, and 8000 mine-workers in Central Italy are striking in support of wage demands.
The Government is considering a proposal for a 25 per cent, reduction in th e price of bread in an attempt to offset, any internal effects of devaluation.
The Communist Party has threatened increased labour agitation on the assumption that living costs will rise and has planned a big attack on the Government in Parliament this week.
