SUBMARINES FOR SYDNEY

WELLINGTON, Sept 27. Arrangements have been completed between the United Kingdom, the Australian and New Zealand Governments to base three submarines of the Royal Navy at Sydney. It will enable practical anti-submarine traininng to be carried out by ships of the Australian and New Zealand Navies, and units of the Royal Navy based in the Far East. Two submarines, H.M.S. Telemachus and H.M.S. Thorough probably will leave the United Kingdom in November and arrive in, Australia in Januarj'. They are submarines of the patrol type, with a displacement of 1090 tons standard and 1575 tons submerged. Other particulars are.—• Length 273 ft; beam 261 ft; draught 12ft; guns, one four-inch, one 20m.m. three machine-guns. They carry 17 torpedoes and have a surface speed of 15 knots, and nine knots when submerged.
