In the House of Representatives yesterday, Rt. Hon. W. Nash gave notice of his intention to move that, as from to-morrow, the House should sit until midnight on Tuesday’s Wed-, nesdays, and Thursday, of each week.

The town planning officer to the Christchurch City Council, Miss Nancy Northcroft and a ' leading architect, will visit Greymouth to consult with the Greymouth Borough Council on the utilisation of the old Town Hall site and the Dennehy estate, said the Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge, yesterday. Regarding the future of the old Town Hall site the Mayor said that the council could not lawfully erect shops on the site to let unless it used the same building for its own purposes, such as offices or a town hall.

Believed to have been lost from his home at Crushington, Mr Stewart George Munro, aged 37, a Ministry of Works employee, was found at Christchurch yesterday, where he had decided to spend a rest after his recent discharge from the Reefton Hospital on September 16. _ He was seen in the Inangahua district a few days later, after which his absence was noted by neighbours who called the police and a search was begun in the district and was abandoned yesterday after it was reported that he was in Christchurch.

Blown like a chip before a stiff northerly breeze, a Tiger Moth aircraft, with two Auckland Aero Club members, Messrs T. D. Faithful and N. S. McQuilkin, made what is claimed to be a record journey. From the take-off to the touch-down the flight occupied one hour 40 minutes, the average speed being close to 140 m.p.h. for the 230 miles journey.

“It is time to put aside personal recriminations and get behind the productive drive,” said Mr F. P. Walsh, chairman of the Aid for Britain National Council, in replying to a statement in reference to dairy production targets, made in Auckland by Mr W. E. Hale, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Board. “Never has Britain needed our help more,” said Mr Walsh. “Devaluation may result in reducing, once more, the meat that the Argentine will supply and it will certainly mean higher prices for Canadian and American foodstuffs. Let us all put aside our personal recriminations and get behind the production drive.”

Four cadets, one from each area of the Southern Military District have been nominated for the William Robert Friar Memorial’ Prize, awarded annually to the best cadet in the district. They are: W.O. 2R. T. Dawson, Ashburton High School, area 10; Sergeant W. H. McLeod, Nelson College, area 9, R.S.M. 1., H. Burrows, W’aitaki Boys’ High School, area 11; R.S.M. T. B. Butson, Southland Boys ’High School, area 12. The award of the prize (a book provided by the Imperial Cadet Association of England), will be made after the nominees have been interviewed by the commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier C. E. Weir). The nominees were selected for their military abilities, personality, knowledge , proficiency in sports and according to courses they had attended.

The equinectual gales with consequent seas, have delayed the departure from Greymouth of the steamers Gabriella and Omana. The Gabriella, which has been ready to sail since last Friday, has been held up by seas on the bar. The Omana competed loading coal for Auckland yesterday. The Poolta is due to-day from Wellington, to load coal for return, the Konui is expected from Wellington to-morrow, and the Kaimiro from Auckland at the weekend. The depth of the bar at high water yesterday was 19ft. 4ins.

With intermittent showers and cold temperatures conditions yesterday were far from ideal, there being also a strong westerly wind. The maximum temperature was 53.7 degrees, exactly 10 degrees lower than the corresponding day last week, when 63.7 degrees was recorded. To date this year, 70.02 inches of rain has been recorded. The sunshine to date this year is 1185.8 hours, 115.4 of which have been recorded this month. Yesterday’s sunshine amounted to just over one hour. According to local gardeners the warm spell that was experienced a few weeks ago helped the growth considerably, but the cold spell this week has had exactly the opposite effect.

The price of pies is to be increased in Invercargill. The Southland master Bakers and pastry cooks association at a meeting yesterday decided that because of an advance in the cost of ingredients, the price of pies would have to be raised to an ammount authorised earlier by the pricetribunal. The new retail price from monday will be 5/- per dozen.

Shortly before 2 a.m. to-day Greymouth streets were whitened by a heavy fall of hail, which, fortunately, did not last long, but must have been a menace for early growth in gardens.
