HONG KONG, August 23. Over five hundred people were killed this morning when a Chinese ammunition ship, the Chungli, exploded at Takao harbour in south-eastern Formosa, says the official Chinese News Agency. . The ammunition was being unloaded from the Chungli when an explosion blew it up. M The explosion set fire to 10 warehn, s and to two nearby ships, which later sank. The blast broke nearly every window in Takao and caused extensive damage. Terror spread through the city, which was darkened by the smoke, vfnst of the dead and an unestimated number of injured were struck by Ilyin" shranne* as shells aboard the Chunli exploded. . The explosion occurred duringthe latter stages of the unloading of 4000 ons of ammunition.
