Finnish Ship Deserter’s Deportation Not Ordered
PA WELLINGTON, Aug. 23 The Finnish seaman, Arimo Karhunen, aged twenty, appeared again before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, on the charge of being a prohibited immigrant. The Magistrate deferred the case for three months, when it will be reconsidered. Karhunen was placed under the supervision of a Probation Officer, and was ordered to work where he was directed. The Magistrate said it must be impressed upon Karhunen that the Court had not granted him a permit to stay in New Zealand. The Collector of Customs, Mr H. Thomas, said that Karhunen had applied for a permit late in the afternoon of the day his ship, the Herbrand, sailed for Sourabaya. He was told that a decision could not be given before the ship sailed, but it could be forwarded to him at Sourabaya. It had been made clear to him that, if he did not sail with his shin, it would be a bad recommendation for his application. Mr Thomas sought an order for deportation.
