EVACUATION OF CANTON OFFICIALS
CANTON, August 20. Half of the National Government civil servants have already evacuated Canton to Chungking or Formosa. Another* 30 per cent, ai'e said to be going in the next few days. The remainder, howeer, will stay as long as possible. Communists are within 30 miles of Lanchow, the provincial capital of Mansu province. In Eastern Hunan, the Communists are reported to have captured Anjen, 45 miles from Hengyang. The Chinese Government has agreed to aljpw the steamer General Gordon to enter Shanghai to evacuate American nationals.
