NEW ZEALANDERS DISMISS LANCASHIRE FOR 318 WITH INTERESTING PROSPECTS

(Received 9.35 p.m.) LIVERPOOL, August 20 Meeting Lancashire for the second time on their tour, the New Zealanders to-day got them out for 318, and lost none for nine.

With only three of the regular bowlers—Cowie, Cave, and Burke—and eight overs by Rabone, New Zealand put out the county in time to allow themselves only five minutes’ batting. Before the close of play Sutcliffe and Scott made nine. The New Zealanders arrived in Liverpool to play at 10 a.m., they having spent eleven and a-half hours in a train, travelling rather sleeplessly from Sunderland. They would have preferred to bat, but Wallace was not lucky with the toss, 'and they spent a long, hot, sunny day in the “paddock”, but they fielded like heroes, earning the warm praise of the discerning Lancashifemen. In spite of the opening of the football season, there was an attendance of over seven thouosand, of which six thousand paid. Washbrook scored a good century for Lancashire, and went on to make 125. He was in for nearly four hours, and scored fifteen fours. The Lancashire tail did a certain amount of wagging. The chief burden of the bowling was taken by Burke, who worked for nearly four hours. He took three wickets for 117, and for long periods he kept the Lancashire men quiet. Mooney kept wicket at the start of the innings, but, as his bruiser finger continued to pain him, he was relieved after lunch, by Reid. The pitch was easy-paced, and it gave the bowlers little aid. This match has the appearance of being far more interesting than the first game between Lancashire and New Zealand. The game was only twenty minutes old, and Lancashire were twelve, when Cave completely beat Ikin with a swinger. It was the only encouragement gleaned by New Zealand before lunch, for Place and Washbrook batted determinedly, bringing the score to one for 83 at the interval. After lunch Place was immediately beaten by Burke, and Reid did a smart piece of stumping. Then came the best partnership of the day between Washbrook and Wharton, a left-hander, who played in an earlier test. They put on 97 runs in 90 minutes. Then Wharton, attempting a single, patted Rabone to Cave in the gully, and was run out for his pains. Rabone then had Howard, the Lancashire captain, leg before, and at tea the score stood at five for 221, Washbrook being 125. Burke, in the first over after tea, had the satisfaction of bowling and catching Washbrook. Cowie and Cave now came into their own with a new ball, Cowie bowling Barlow, and Cave knocking out one of Hilton’s stumps.

Greenwood and Tattersail, a lefthander, set themselves at the wicket, and hit 56 in 50 minutes. Cave beat Greenwood with a fizzer, and Mooney lived up to his reputation, this time at second slip. Townsend, after a useful 39, was run out. Sutcliffe caused a roar of delight when he pulled the first ball from Stone for four, and another roar of amusement when he swished a rising ball high over the wicketkeeper to the boundary. Scores:— LANCASHIRE First Innings Washbrook, c and b Burke .... 125 Ikin, b Cave 6 Face, stpd. Reid, b Burke 35

DURHAM MANAGE TO AVERT DEFEAT LONDON, Aug. 21 N.Z. drew with Durham, who followed on. Off the last ball the last man was caught with Durham 34 runs ahead, avoiding an innings defeat.
