CUTTER’S CROSSING OF ATLANTIC
LONDON, Aug. 18. The Canadian brothers, Stanley and Colin Smith, who crossed the Atlantic from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in their self-built 20-foot cutter, “Nova Espero” told of a six-weeks 3,000-mile trip in crammed conditions. Their cabin measured only 6ft by 4ft. At times they had to bail frantically to keep their craft afloat. Once they had to lie in their cabin for 18 hours with a canvas cover lashed across the top, as heavy seas swept their deck. In the Channel .on Wednesday night there was a dramatic reunion when the mother, father and sister of the two brothers came alongside the “Nova Espero” in a launch. The “Nova Espero” is believed to be + he smallest boat to cross the Atlantic.
