New Zealand batsmen are now thoroughly in form. They demonstrated this pleasantly to-day at Southampton by scoring 430 for five wickets (declared), and taking a lead over Hampshire on the first innings of 301. Scott and Donnelly both hit centuries, and there were century partnerships by Scott-Sutcliffe, 142; Scott-Hadlee, 100; and DonnellyReid, 105. Total for five wickets dec. . 430 BOWLING

The Hampshire bowling was by no means indifferent and the average hourly rate for the innings was 66. The Scott-Sutcliffe partnership of 142 was their highest of the tour and took two hours 50 minutes.

Sutcliffe, who was then 71, played on while attempting to late-cut Knott. Both he and Scott batted with care and restraint against bowling which was always of good length and keen fielding. Sutcliffe, like Smith, has put himself back among the runs by much painstaking practice at the nets. The century, however, still remains elusive to Sutcliffe.

When Reid and Donnelly came together, the Hampshire bowling had lost its fine edge and their 105 partnership came in 65 minutes. Smith cut and leg-glanced easily, but he was too enthusiastic about hitting Eager out of the ground and was well-stumped.

Hampshire are 120 for three wickets in their second innings and require 181 to avoid an innings defeat.

Hayes gave Hampshire anothei sorrowful start when he bowled Rogers with his third ball and a little while later knocked out one of Guard’s stumps. Hampshire recovered and Bailey and McCorkel brought 50 up in 52 minutes.
