REMEMBRANCE DAY IN LONDON

LONDON, Nov. 7 Rain and a cold wind which swept down Whitehall reduced to only ! 5000 the crowd which assembled at the Cenotaph to see His Majesty place a wreath of poppies at the base as a tribute to the dead of two wars. Usually a crowd of about 30,000 witnesses the ceremony, which was curtailed to-day because of the weather. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of Gloucester accompanied His Maejsty and also placed wreaths. Queen Mary, Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Kent watched the ceremony from a window of the Home Office. Queen Elizabeth missed her first Remembrance Day service for many years because of an influenzal cold.from which she is recovering. Mr Attlee Mr Churchill, members of the Cabinet, and Mr W. J. Jordan (for [New Zealand) also placed wreaths on the Cenotaph. The Bishop of London Dr Wand, said a sepcial prayer. Deputising for the Queen, Princess Margaret unveiled a stained glass window in Westniinster Abbey in memory of the citizens of Westminster killed during the last war. Princess Margaret planted twG poppy crosses in the Field of Remembrance in St Margaret s churchyard, one from the Queen and one from herself- . Cabinet Ministers, service chiefs and the Dominions’ High Commissioners, attended the Abbey ceremony.
