Railway Tradesmen Threaten Direct Action
AUCKLAND, October 29.
The railway tradesmen at Otahuhu are threatening direct action as a protest against the Government delay in recognising their grievances. A largely-attended meeting yesterday carried unanimously the following resolution: “This branch of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association, in view of the delay by the Government in settling the margins and anomalies question, decides that if a decision has not been given within two weeks, the national executive be called together to organise direct action in order to place our position before the public”. Railway tradesmen say that many of them have to pay exacting examinations, and yet the wage margin between them and semi-skilled workers is only about one penny half-penny an hour.
