(Received October 27, 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 26. The U.S.S. “Des Moines,” of 17,000 tons, the heaviest “heavy” cruiser in the world and the first warship to mount completely automatic rapidfire eight-inch guns, will be commissioned early next month. Her eight-inchers can fire four times faster than any guns of the same or a larger calibre. The “Des Moines” is the first of an entirely new class of heavy cruisers, capable of at least thirty knots.
