DISEASES IN SAMOA TO BE INVESTIGATED BY N.Z. EXPERTS

PA DUNEDIN, October IS. A medical research expedition, led bv live experts in, different fields, will leave New Zealand, near the end of November for a three months working survey of the incidence of diseases in Western Samoa. This announcement was made by the leader of the expedition, Dr.. H. D. Purves, Chief Research Officer for thyroid research at Otago Medical School. . The members of the expedition, who are undertaking the work on behalf of the Medical Research Clinic of the Department of Health, have all been- drawn from Dunedin. Dr. Purves will have a team of four experienced research authorities. Dr. M. J. Marples will study diseases due to" fungus infections, most of which are expected to be skin complaints. Mr. J. A. Samuels is the bacteriologist of the party and Mr. G. N. Davies of the Department of Preventive Dentistry of the Otago Dental School will study dental conditions, dental caries, and diseases of the gums. The fifth member will be. Dr. Brian C. Thompson, who will investigate lung infection in the area, with special reference to tuberculosis.
