POTATO GROWERS’ COMPENSATION

P.A. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 15 Compensation, estimated at about £3500* will be paid to potato growers in Southland in terms of the Government’s undertaking to take over all potatoes of fair average quality remaining unsold at the end of October. At a meeting held to-day, between officials of the produce section of the Internal Marketing Department, representatives of the Department of Agriculture, the Invercargill Grain and Produce Merchants’ Association, and the Government grader, the procedure to be adopted was outlined. It was made clear that the Government was only interested in potatoes grown under contract through the merchant brokers. Those contracts call for f.a.q. potatoes and compensation will be paid on a proportion of f.a.w. potatoes in each line.
