Christchurch Protest Over Games Venue

p A CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 10. Resolutions calling on the Council of the New Zealand Olympic Association to reverse the executive’s decision in awarding the Empire Games to Auckland and asking Auckland to support Canterbury’s request were submitted ’to an openair protest meeting held in Cathedral Square in the lunch-hour to-day. Despite the rain a large crowd heard the Mayor (Mr. E. H. Andrews) and other speakers outline Canterbury’s case and explain why they considered Canterbury had been unfairly dealt with. , Another resolution called for. a referendum of national sporting bodies as a preliminary to the reopening of the question of venue. BULLER SUPPORT. WESTPORT, September 10. The Buller Progress League decided at its monthly meeting last night to protest to the Empire Games Association at the allocation of the Empire Games to Auckland. It was considered that as Canterbury was celebrating its centennary in 1950 the Games should definitely be held there and nowhere else.
