U.S. Gets Trade Preference For Pacific Trust Islands
(Reuter —N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10.0) GENEVA, Sept. 9 The International Trade and Tariff Conference gave the United States permission to introduce preference for her trust territories in the Pacific, the former Japanese possessions in the Marshall, Caroline and Marianna Islands. Britain, Australia and fourteen other nations voted for preferences. New Zealand and Belgium abstained. The preferences will apply principally to copra and phosphate and are designed to assist economically weak areas. ~ , The United States delegate said the preferences would be “one way” and would not give the United States an advance in Pacific markets.
