Dunollie Women’s Institute Meeting
The Dunollie Women’s Institute held its August meeting in the club room. Mrs Barker, senr.,- presided over a good attendance. One new member was welcomed. Mrs J. Harrington read the aspirations. “Comrades and Friends" was sung by all members. Invitations were accepted from Runanga and Greymouth Institutes to be present at their respective birthday parties. The roll call, “Butter saving suggestions", and the motto, “The way to gain a friend is to be one", were read. A demonstration of a rucked cushion was given by Mrs Smith. Competitions were judged by Mrs T. O’Loughlin and Mrs Scullions. These resulted: Trav cloth, Mrs Blacklock 1, Mrs Symes 2, Mrs Barrow 3. Pikelets, Mrs Barrow 1, Mrs Blacklock 2, Mrs J. Harrington 3. Spray, Mrs Tinnery 1, Mrs Barrow 2. Birthday sprays were presented to Mrs Smith and Mrs Symes. Hostesses were Mesdames Leitch, Watson, NicholsOn and Smithson. Mrs Barker rendered a recitation. Ross Birthday The Institute at its August meeting celebrated its 15th birthday in the form of a most enjoyable ana successful masked fancy dress party, when the hall was filled to capacity with members and their friends. A warm welcome was extended to a visiting member of the Harihari Institute and to two visitors from Hokitika. Among some of the excellent costumes worn were noticed those of Dinah and Sambo. Dave and Mabel (who gave a most amusing demonstration of the Snake Gully Swagger), the Witch who arrived on her/broomstick, a most realistic Big Bad Wolf, a Maori woman splendidly tattooed for the occasion, and a modern gentleman golfer. Items were given by Mrs A. Heald—a song; Miss Kiely—a humorous sketch; and the Misses Muir—a duet. Some of the member 1 read two humorous plays, which were much enjoyed, the costumes for their several parts producing a great deal of laughter. The president, Mrs Ross Jones, m a short speech, welcomed all visitors, and the ladies provided a beautiful supper, after which visiting members were given the privilege of cutting and distributing the cake. . Miss P. Kiely, who is leaving Ro a s to take up a position in Christchurch, was bidden farewell by the president and presented with a gift in appreciation of her splendid cooperation while a member of the Institute. The president and her committee are to be congratulated on the organisation of the entertainment. The evening closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
