Joe Louis Retires But May Fight Again NEW YORK, Aug. 22. Joe Louis said he would officially retire from boxing this week, but would retain the right to reclaim the title within six months. Louis insisted that he has definitely finished with boxing, but said his formal retirement notice to Mike Jacobs, of the Twentieth Century Sporting Club in New York, would contain a clause that would enable him to reclaim and defend the title within six months. The Twentieth Century Sporting Club spokesman refused to comment on Louis’s statement. Boxing circles, however, interpret his seemingly ambiguous statement as a fair indication that he will fi<?ht asain.
