Norfolk Island Cable Repair Job Delayed By Adverse Seas
P.A. AUCKLAND, May 5. Dogged by bad weather from her arrival at Norfolk Island on April 16, the Government lighthouse steamer, Matai, on charter to Cable and Wireless, Ltd., returned to Auckland today, after completing a cable repair job that took only 18 hours. This was the replacement of the shore end section of the cable from Norfolk Island to Auckland, which was badly worn. After unloading stores, the vessel had to stand offshore awaiting suitable weather for the work, and because of the paralysis restrictions, the crew were not allowed ashore. When taking a pilot line ashore on April 26, the ship’s boat capsized, flinging its crew of eight into the breakers. All of them got ashore, and later were picked up by another boat. No work was possible until Saturday last, when a mile and a-half of cable was spliced by Post and Telegraph engineers under 'Mr F. C. Gentry, superintending engineer, Welhngton.
