FOOD REGULATIONS TO CHECK TYPHOID
WELLINGTON, April 21. Authority for a medical officer of oid or para-typhoid fevei' from handoid cf para-typhoid fever from handling food for sale is contained in the recently gazetted Health (Infectious and Notifiable Diseases! Regulations. In the past, legal power for this were lacking, and the Medical Officer of Health had to depend on persuasion. The' regulations replace "orresponding regulations enacted in February, 1921, which are now out of «date. They follow the general line of existing regulations. Any contact of diphtheria, dysentery, or stzeptococeal sore throat is prohibited from handling milk and milk product;-; for sale until permitted to do so by a Medical Officer of Health. Those diseases may become widespread through the consumption of infected milk. Provision is made in the regulations for the issuing of international vaccination certificates as laid down in International Sanitary Conventions. In recent years public health officials throughout the world have come to realise that customary isolation periods for many infectious diseases were unnecessarily long, and served no good purpose. Amendments made in the regulations follow closely the officially accepted practice in Britain and U.S.A.
