OHAI MINES PRODUCE MORE ON 7-HOUR DAY

INVERCARGILL, April 19. There has been no decrease in output from the Ohai coal mines as a result of the introduction of the seven-hour day for miners. On the "contrary, there has been a slight increase in production. ' This was reported at a recent meeting of the Ohai-Nightcaps Miners’ Union. It was also stated that the superintendent of State mines at Ohai, Mr J. McArthur, would leave- shortly for Australia to study the latest mechanised methods of coal production m order to gain knowledge that will be useful to him when the new Morley mine is opened by the State at Ohai. The State open cast mine at Ohai r is in production again after a long period for stripping. Towards the end of 1946 this mine was producing 200 tons of coal daily, but since the beginning of last year there'has been very little output. It is expected that there will be steady production from this mine from now on.
