ATTEMPT TO DERAIL AUCKLAND TRAIN
P.A. AUCKLAND, Feb. 29 An attempt to derail a train near the city was made last night. Obstructions were laid on the railway line at the Purewa tunnel. This was discovered when the crew of an incoming train saw that a sleeper had been placed across the rails on the opposite track, and then saw a steel plate on the rails in the tunnel. i The train crew’s vigilance prevented possible damage to trains and the permanent, way The driver of an earlier tram reported that he saw a man in the vicinity of the tunnel. He turned the headlight o;' the locomotive full on, but the man quickly disappeared. The railway lines are now being patrolled and detectives are investigating.
