British Building More than Half of World’s New Shipping
(Rec. 11.10) LONDON, Jan. 20. Lloyds has announced that the total tonnage of shipping under construction in the United Kingdom in the quarter ended December 31, 1947 was 2,173,361, w’hich was the highest since 1922 by more than two hundred thousand tons, and exceeded the tonnage under construction during the previous quarter by sixty thousand tons. Lloyds added that a continued increase was influenced by delays in the completion of ships and a prolongation in the time required to build them. British construction represented fifty-four decimal fiftyseven per cent, of the total tonnage under construction in the world in the same period . DOMINION NEWS Sunday Islander’s Accident.—A native labourer on Raoul or Sunday Island, in the Kermadecs, had an eye injured by a tennis ball on Thursday, and when it was decided that he needed immediate expert medical attention the New Zealand Government Public Works Department meteorological station, which employs him as a labourer, communicated with Wellington. It was arranged for the Union Company vessel, Sheaf Holme, to be diverted from the AucklandSuva run to pick up the native and take him to Suva. He embarked yesterday, and will be landed at Lautoka on Friday.—Wellington, January 19.
