CAMPAIGN TO SOW MORE N.Z. WHEAT

Opens in Canterbury CHRISTCHURCH, Jan 15. A national campaign to increase the wheat acreage to .the target set by the Aid for Britain National Council opened in Canterbury tins week with a visit from the chairman of the council, Mr F. P. Walsh. “Everyone should know that the most tangible means of assisting Britain is to increase production, and wheat presents a world and a national problem so serious that there is none other that must be tackled more urgently, or with more fervour and energy," said Mr Walsh, ma statement. “Production is one side of the world wheat problem, and shipping is another. New Zealand, by growing more wheat, can relieve part of Britain’s great burden in both the • field of supply and that of transport.” He said the National Council was confident that, with the facts before those who are farmers on wheat land the necessary response would be forthcoming. The farmers had not yet failed, said Mr Walsh, to rise to the occasion, and this was comparble in seriousness with the days of threat of isolation by war, when the growers achieved high targets. Mr Walsh said that he had attended meetings with the Federated Farmers, the United Wheat Growers, the Flour Millers, tne Manure Merchants’ Association, the brokers, the stock and station agents, the implement importers, the District Aid For Britain committee, the Wheat Commitee, and the Department, of Agriculture. In the next two weeks, more intimate contacts with the actual growers and the prospective growers of wheat would be made throughout Canterbury. Plans were being made in the other smaller, but relatively as important, wheat, growing areas of both the North and South Islands to "increase production.
