Chinese Imprisoned for “Receiving” Smuggled Cigarettes
DUNEDIN, June 26.
A month’s imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr J. D. Willis S.M., to-day on Chin Fooi, a wellknown Chinese laundryman aged 64, after he pleaded guilty to receiving 295 packets of cigarettes, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, knowing the goods to have been dishonestly obtained. It was discovered on May 27 that 10,300 cigarettes had been stolen from the freighter Ottawa Valley. On information received the police visited Fooi’s laundry and found that he was selling cigarettes of the same brand. Counsel suggested a fine because of Fooi’s excellent 44 years’ record in New Zealand.
Mr "Willis said receiving was worse than stealing, because if there were no receivers there would be no thieving. Fooi must have known the cigarettes were stolen and, if any person on the wharves admitted the charge, prison would follow. Fooi must be similarly dealt with.
