Over Million Tons of U.S.A. Coal for Britain

LONDON, May 22. The European Coal Organisation has recommended the allocation of 600,000 tons of American coal to the United Kingdom for the quarterly period covering July to September. Mr. J. R. Griffiths, chairman of the organisation, said there were reasonable prospects that the United Kingdom would receive its total bid of 1,200,000 tons. Supply depends upon a total of 9,000,000 tons being available from the United States for allocation to European countries normally receiving an allocation. Mr. Griffiths said Britain’s era of U.S. coal was formed so as not to cause any loss of coal to other European countries. The allocation to Britain would be made only if the American deliveries exceeded the rate of 9,000,000 tons quarterly and would be made proportionately with the other European users.
