Avon Election Campaign
CHRISTCHURCH, May 22. ‘•Renegades, racketeers, and gangsters,” were terms Mr W. Sullivan (Nationalist M.P. for Bay of Plenty), io describe the heads of some militant unions, in a speech in the Avon i.ciiun campaign. Heads of milieu. unions were wrecking indus.riai re.a.ionships. The position on the waterfront was so bad, that responsible head s of shipping companies were refusing to let their ships come to New Zealand because of 'the slow turn-around. The Wanganella’s plight since her stranding was a disgrace to the workers. The worker* concerned had been unfair and unjust in the way they had taken an advantage. The militant unionists were trying to secure more power through the consolidation of unions. If they succeeded in this end and in gaining more political power for themselves, they would be an even greater force for evil. Mr Frasfw mould have shown the same firmness towards the militant unions as he had shown towards the men from H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona, and the public light have been more satisfied.
