WHAT CHURCHILL SAID IN 1940

(Rec. 10.10)) LONDON, May 22. Rt. Hon. Dr. Hugh Dalton, Chancellor of the Exchequer, yesterday received an honorary Doctorate of Law from Manchester University. He said in the dark days of 1940, Mr Churchill greeted his Coalition Cabinet on its formation with the words: “We must fi-ght on to the end, no matter what the cost to each and all of us. If this long island story of ours is to end at last, then I say it will only end when each of us lies choking in his own blood upon the ground.” Dr Dalton said: “I shall never forget them. That was the spirit in which he led us, in which all the country followed, and in which the great victory in the end was won.”
