City Council’s Loss in Tram Fares

WELLINGTON, May 22. He estimated that between £4OO and £5OO a week was being lost by the failure of tram conductors to collect fares, said tiie Mayor, Mr W. Appleton. at last night's meeting of the Wellington City Council. He quoted an instance reported by' a citizen where no fares had been collected on a tram between Wadestown and Lambton Quay. This was not an isolated case, he said, as sometimes the conductors were not even go’ng through the trams. People were actually sending their fares in to the county office because they had not been collected.
