GREY LABOUR PAPER BOARD

APPEAL FUND. Elsewhere in our columns is an advertisement asking the workers of the West Coast to subscribe to a fund to enable the “Argus” offices to be rebuilt. T’o those who have been with us throughout the hard years and found the money' to purchase control of the paper we do not need any' introduction or any explanation of our actions, but those who have grown up under better conditions, it is necessary to state we have been running the “Argus” as a Labour Daily' since 1919; and have firmly established that paper as a paying concern. We have managed to do this notwithstanding a building that was crumbling about our ears and worn out machinery'. Now we have arrived at the stage when the building will no longer stand' up, and the machinery function as an economic unit. We are somewhat proud of our work in the past and hope to have the opportunity' of continuing it under better conditions and with better machinery. The “Argus” is our paper ! We have shown thal we can run a worker-controlled daily newspaper successfully' for over a quarter of a century, and with the help of those who helped us in the past we hope to run it for the next 28 years. By that time we hope the workers will be so far advanced that they will control all newspapers and in fact the earth and the fulness thereof.
