Maori Welfare Officers Appointed
WELLINGTON, May 15. A further important step in the implementation of the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Act, 1945, was announced by the Minister of Native Affairs ,Hon. P. Fraser, who named 29 Maori welfare officers whose responsibility will be. to assist in administering the Act. With the exception of two officers appointed for Christchurch, all the positions are for North Island centres. In the Wellington area, comprising all Makara and Hutt counties, Johnsonville, Petone, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt and Wellington, a Maori .population, estimated at 1,193 will be under the care of Mrs. Kuini Te Tau and Mr. F. B. Katene. Other welfare officers and their districts, with population figures in brackets are:— Mr. D. N. Perry, Opotiki (3,176); Mr. Wi Pere Amaru, Ruatoria (5,771); Mr. Kahutia Te Hau and Mrs. Maora Tamihana, Gisborne (4,139); Mr. Moana Raureti, Wairoa (4,342); Mr. Te Kauru Karaitiana and Mrs. Ema Otene, Hastings (4,441); Mr. Hohepa Jacob, Levin (4,090); Mrs. Rangitaamo Takarangi, Wanganui (4,111); Mr. Robert Reremai Keepa, Taumarunui (2,589); Mr. Aterea John Davis and Airs. Raumatiki Wright, Hawera (4,759); Mr. Heikahurangi Rogers, Kaikohe; Mr. Rihimona Davis and Mrs. Katerina Maihi, Whangarei; Mr. W. M. Karaka, Mr. Harris Kelly, Mrs. Taku Waera and Miss Miraka Petricevich, Auckland;' Mr. William Herewini, Hamseph and Mrs. Grace McNaught, Te Kuiti; Mr. T. M. Wilkinson, Paeroa; Mr. Hamuera Taiporutu Mitchell and Mrs. Nini Naera, Rotorua.
Seven of the new appointees are returned servicemen.
