TRANSPORT MINISTER ORDERS A CHECK ON ALL MOTOR LIGHTS
WELLINGTON, .May 21. Traffic accidents at night haa again assumed serious proportions, said the Minister of Transport (Mr O’Brien) in a statement issued from v'/clLngton last evening that he haa given instructions that organised checks on motor vehicle lights were to be made 'on all highways carrying dense traffic. This organised 'flrive on lights would begin on Monday. The Minister said that last month seventeen deaths occurred as a result oi "in the dark” accidents and so far this month eight further fatal accidents after nightfall had been reported. With the approach of winter, traffic peaks were occurring during the hours of darkness. It was essential that every available step be taken to counter the increased hazard caused by the lack of ability to see on the part of drivers of motor vehicles. The Minister said that where fights were not correctly adjusted O’ where a driver failed to dip hi lights, Transport Department inspectors would isue a traffic offence nrtice and the department would prosecute the offender.
