Singapore Gaol Trouble
SINGAPORE, May 20. Two former Australian soldiers, just released from the gaol in Singapore which was discussed in thG House of Commons, related before they sailed for home how seven European prisoners were all sentenced to solitary confinement for refusing to reveal the names of two men who cut through a cell bar in an attempt to escape. The Australians said that the European prisoners in the gaol were not as badly off as the Asiatics. They stated: “We hardly did any work there. We Europeans once staged a protest and the Asiatics struck against the food, but the prison doctor said the calorific content was sufficient. The Governor of Singapore, Sir Franklyn Gimson, visited the prison and promised to look into oui* complaints.”
