German Reply: No Order with Hunger!

(Rec. 8.55). LONDON, May 21. The Minister of Food and Agriculture for the North Rhine-Westphalia State, Herr Heinrich Luebke, told the State Parliament: “If political commonsense is not a sufficient reason to extend help to us Germans, then the force of the economic conditions on the world market will render aid imperative!” Herr Luebke asserted: “Our official daily ration has never reached 1550 calories. It has now become less than 1000 calories a day, and it is even down to 700 calories”. He denied “the foreign accusations” that the German farmers were responsible for the present shortages. He added: “There can be no order, or planning, where there is hunger! We, therefore, call on the world's help for our starving country”.
