Wanganella Dispute
WELLINGTON, May 2. Mr. James Cable, managing-direc-tor of William Cable and Company, Ltd., when asked about the impasse reached in the Wanganella dispute said.— “It is definitely up to the Government to make a move now. Any move now, if it does not come from the unions, must come from the Government.” Union representatives report that a furthex* conference of officials concerned was held at which it was agreed that the status quo should be allowed to stand. No date for another meeting has been named. The unions were again asked to place the dispute in the hands of officers of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, but for the second time have refused. Cable's Employees in New Jobs Most of the 200 workers who have resigned from the staff of Cable and Company have found temporary or permanent jobs elsewhere. At least 100 are doing casual work on the waterfront, seeking and finding lucrative employment, and getting sympathetic assistance from the waterside workers officials.
