POOR SEASON FOR CANTERBURY TOMATO CROP
CHRISTCHURCH, April 16. The bulk of the crop of outdoor tomatoes in Christchurch is likely to be almost a total loss to growers, this season. Because of lack of sunshine and cold nights, the tomatoes have been ripening slowly and growers estimate that less than 25 per cent, of the crop has been harvested. Early in the season the ground was so wet that growers had to hold back their planting and then the plants had a set-back with nearly a month of could south-westerly winds. Nearly 1,000,000 new plants had to be put in, but although the tomatoes set well, they did not come on in March as expected. Ac a result, only small supplies have been coming into the local market, and growers who normally ship large quantities to Dunedin and Invercargill have had tittle to send. The ceiling price on tomatoeswas lifted as from Monday, but growers are unable to take full advantage of the rise in prices.
