I. FORCE TROOPS ELIGIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT TAXES

Troops going now to join J Force in Japan will pay social security and income taxes on their Army pay, which is on the new scale and represents a substantial increase on present rates paid to members of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. This information was given “The Press” last night by the Minister of Defence (Mr. F. Jones) who also said that troops now in Japan and electing to stay in Japan for a further term had the choice of saying whether they would take 2nd N.Z.E.F. rates of pay or the new scale recently announced for the New Zealand Army. Rates of pay for the 2nd NZ.E.F. undei* the old scale are free of all taxation, but he was of the opinion that when the two scales were compared the new one would prove to be the better.
